This terraced house had a small back yard behind a low brick wall, with damaged brick pillars and old metal railings that offered little privacy from the back lane and left the bins on show.
We replaced the pillars and railings with a timber fence built on top of the existing wall, finished with a capping rail along the top to protect the board ends and give a clean line. A new ledged and braced gate with heavy black hinges gives access from the lane, and the bins now sit neatly inside the yard.
The new fence makes the yard private and secure, and because the boundary is now one solid line rather than a mix of brick and railings, the space feels larger and more open.

Terraced streets with shared back lanes are common in the older parts of Prudhoe and the surrounding Tyne Valley towns. Back yards here are often small and overlooked, so a well-built fence and gate can make a big difference to how private and usable they feel.
