This large, established garden is defined by its hedges and sculpted shrubs: long formal boundary hedges, rounded topiary shapes and layered, cloud-like forms that wrap around the patio and conservatory. Planting on this scale needs careful, regular attention, or the shapes soon blur and the garden loses its structure.
We trimmed each hedge and shrub back to its line, following the existing curves and domes rather than cutting everything square. Tops were kept level along the long runs, faces cut straight, and the sculpted shapes brought back to clean, defined outlines. All the clippings were cleared from the lawns, paths and stone walls before we left.
The result is a garden that looks deliberate and well kept again, with the hedges framing the lawns and the views beyond.
Working in Hedley on the Hill
Hedley on the Hill is a small hilltop village south of the Tyne, a short drive from our base in Prudhoe, known for its stone-built houses and wide views across the surrounding countryside. Gardens up here are more exposed than those in the valley, and dense, well-maintained hedges do an important job as shelter from the wind as well as boundaries.
