The owners of this garden wanted something that looked good all year without the work of mowing a lawn. The old grass had become patchy and full of weeds, and the trees and shrubs around the edges had grown large and heavy.
We removed the lawn and replaced it with a large area of light grey gravel, laid in a curved shape with neat edging, which keeps the garden feeling open and bright. The trees and overgrowth were trimmed back to let in more light, and the borders were cleared and replanted with a mix of shrubs and flowering plants. The rotary washing line was kept in place within the gravel.
The finished garden is fresh, colourful and far easier to look after, with the planting set to fill out over the next few seasons.

Ovingham is a village on the north bank of the River Tyne, linked to Prudhoe by a bridge across the river, so it's right on our doorstep. Its leafy gardens are lovely but can quickly become shaded and overgrown, and a low-maintenance redesign is a popular choice for owners who want to enjoy their garden rather than work on it.
